Ultralight Information Manuals

General Overview

As a service to the ultralight community, the Ultralight Pilots Association of Canada (UPAC) has published a set of three manuals which provide a valuable resource for ultralight instructors and reference material for ultralight students and pilots. The manuals are The UPAC Ultralight Information Manual, The Ultralight Pilot’s Manual of Aerodynamics, Meteorology and Navigation, and The Ultralight and Light Plane Condition Manual. The material in these manuals was gathered from the public domain and from the sources listed in the bibliographies. You are encouraged to go to these sources for extra information.

The three manuals, when used as a set, have been organized to reflect Transport Canada’s Study Guide for the Ultralight Pilot Permit. This study guide details the material covered in the ground school course and includes the subject areas that will be tested on an instructor’s pre-solo exam, before a student is issued their Student Pilot Permit and on TC’s exam, ULTRA, which an applicant must pass in order to obtain their Ultralight Pilot Permit. Some of the subjects listed in Transport’s Study Guide are not tested on Transport’s Exam. However, they cover information that will enhance the understanding and safe operation of the ultralight aeroplane. The Ultralight Information Manual covers sections 1, 7, 8 and 9. The Ultralight Pilot’s Manual of Aerodynamics, Meteorology and Navigation covers sections 2, 3, 5, and 7. The Ultralight and Light Plane Condition Manual covers sections 4 and 6.

These manuals are part of UPAC’s efforts at furthering your education and increasing the safety of ultralight flying. When these manuals are used as ground school texts, be aware that they contain more information than the minimum required to safely operate an aeroplane. The instructor will determine what is essential, the “need to know,” for their particular operation. The extra information, the “nice to know,” is included because UPAC recognizes that a pilot license or permit is just the beginning of your education. Our intent is that the information we’ve included can answer questions that come up after you’ve gained some experience, no matter what type of aircraft you fly. The underlying philosophy for giving a pilot extra information is that, given the right information, the pilot will make appropriate decisions that will keep him safe and let him enjoy his sport flying. The information included in these manuals will help you in that decision making process.

These manuals are available to purchase from our UPAC store individually or as a set of three.

UPAC Ultralight Information Manual

The contents of UPAC’s Ultralight Information Manual includes the TC’s rules and requirements which apply to operating ultralight aeroplanes, powered parachute aircraft and hang gliders in Canada. This material covers the required information that Transport Canada tests in the written exam for the Pilot Permit Ultralight Aeroplane, ULTRA.

In general, this manual covers the subjects listed in sections 1, 7, 8 and 9 of TC’s Study Guide. Also included is TC’s Ultralight Study Guide, practice exams, and applications

Ultralight Pilot’s Manual of Aerodynamics, Meteorology and Navigation

The Ultralight Pilots Association of Canada has assembled the material in this publication with the recognition that ultralight aeroplanes are different and that the pilots flying them use them primarily for recreational aviation rather than for transportation.

This manual has three sections – Aerodynamics, Meteorology, and Navigation. Aerodynamics provides information on the fundamentals of flight and flying an aeroplane. Meteorology covers the atmosphere and the air as the fluid in which we operate. Having an appreciation of how air moves, and the weather produced by that movement gives a pilot an idea of the conditions and lets him decide when he can go flying and when he should stay on the ground. Navigation is knowing where you are as you progress from one place to another and being aware of fuel and other parameters along the way.

This manual covers information on the subjects listed in TC’s Ultralight Study Guide under sections 2, 3, 5, and 7.

UPAC Ultralight and Light Plane Condition Manual

The Ultralight Pilots Association of Canada has recognized the need for information for owners of ultralight and light aircraft about the care and condition of their flying machines. This manual was assembled with the idea that pilots should be able to look over their aircraft and determine what may need to be fixed. This manual is to be used as reference material only.

This is not a “how to fix it” manual. It is a compilation of information to help you recognize the need for repairs and to evaluate previous repairs. The information contained in this first edition was compiled from the sources listed in the bibliography. For further information about common repairs practices and maintenance go to the sources. As well, local expertise can be found in a UPAC Squadron or at the local flying clubs. Many aircraft mechanics (AMEs) will also provide you with information and materials. This manual is one of three manual that, when used as a set, contain the information for a complete ultralight ground school course.

This manual covers information on the subjects listed in TC’s Ultralight Study Guide under sections 4 and 6.
